Atakan Güngördü

Atakan is a dual-qualified attorney, admitted to practice in both New York and Türkiye, with a focus on the enforcement of foreign arbitral awards and judgments under the New York and ICSID Conventions, cross-border dispute resolution and public international law.

He advises award creditors, including international investment funds, foreign corporations and sovereign clients, on turning arbitral awards into recovery in and through Türkiye, often as co-counsel with American and British firms. His enforcement work has ranged from ICC and other institutional awards enforced before the Turkish courts to recovery pursued across several jurisdictions at once.

Being admitted in both New York and Türkiye, Atakan often finds himself explaining Turkish enforcement and execution procedure to international counsel and boards while keeping track of parallel proceedings abroad.

In public international law, Atakan advises foreign governments on civil and criminal matters involving their diplomatic missions in Türkiye, with a particular emphasis on sovereign immunity and compliance with the Vienna Conventions on Diplomatic and Consular Relations. He also represents high-profile individuals and media companies in matters involving fair trial rights, liberty and security rights, and freedom of expression before the European Court of Human Rights and the Turkish Constitutional Court.

Atakan has completed work placements with major international human rights organizations in London and Amsterdam and served as a secondee in New York at a leading construction group managing a portfolio of civil lawsuits, in close collaboration with reputable North American law firms.
